DANCING WHILE BLACK: VOICES FROM THE BUSH

An evening of dance and dialogue

FEATURING a conversation on equity in art and new choreography by the latest generation of dancers to emerge from the internationally acclaimed Urban Bush Women dance company.

CHOREOGRAPHERS: Maria Bauman/MBDance; Marjani Forte/LoveForte (with Nia Love); Paloma McGregor/Angela’s Pulse; Samantha Speis. Curated by Paloma McGregor.

PANELISTS: Christal Brown/INSPIRIT dance company; Shalonda Ingram/Nursha Project; cultural critic Greg Tate; Milta Vega-Cardona/People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond; and Tony-nominated choreographer Marlies Yearby. Moderated by Shani Jamila/Human Rights Project at the Urban Justice Center

DANCING WHILE BLACK is an artist-led initiative by Paloma McGregor/Angela’s Pulse that aims to create ongoing platforms for process, dialogue and experimentation and to shift the power of contextualizing work and articulating aesthetic values into the hands, and bodies, of black dancers themselves.

“Where My Girls At?” is a “thoughtful, provocative, and insanely funny” one woman show written and performed by the “multi-talented” Micia Mosely.
A phenomenal one hour performance steeped in improv and audience participation, Where My Girls At? has thrilled audiences across the country from San Francisco, Detroit and New York to Amherst, Chapel Hill and Honolulu. A New York Innovative Theater Award Nominee, the show, while hilarious, continues to tackle difficult issues including inter and intra-group racism, sexism, and homophobia.

This week of festivities includes live performances, showcases, panels, eco art awareness, networking /consulting, and more! In 2009, we began the process of branding Independent Artists’ Week Celebration to the Fillmore Jazz District. We hosted events in the Western Addition between Fulton and Post streets. Our vision is to continue this with the support and participation of the restaurants, business, and community organizations.

Ever heard of Paul Robeson?

Paul Robeson was one of the most internationally renowned and celebrated figures of the twentieth century. Yet, this all-American athlete, Ivy League-educated lawyer, Award-winning actor, record-breaking singer, and highly-decorated social activist was erased from history books due to his unrelenting advocacy for labor rights and racial equality during the McCarthy era. In this provocative and timely new look at his extraordinary life, actress Kim Howard portrays Robeson in his own words as a human being confronting enormous obstacles and achieving unprecedented success. Howard’s theatrical solo performance and innovative multi-media lecture demonstration re-introduces Robeson’s legacy and his uniquely American story to a new generation of audiences.

During this premier weekend, the following artists will also present new one-woman shows:

The wonderful Tantra Zawadi will also present Soldier Blues , an exploration through word, music, and movement of the battlefield of the soul and heart. Soldier Blues is an interpretation through poem and movement, that examines the hearts and circumstances of Americans who enlist in the armed forces because they are patriotic, unemployed or in search of stability. The accompanying original sound track explores the “blues” which also has deep roots in American history. The music progresses as does the poem/video presentation; from the mother who is praying for her soldier girl, the lover-man longing for his woman back in the states, to the married mother who left her family behind.

Soldier Blues , written and performed by Tantra-zawadi, was inspired by American war veteran/poet Xavier Kemp and is a call for America to help our soldiers recover when they return home.Tantra-zawadi, an award winning international poet, recording artist and filmmaker, is a native of Brooklyn, New York. She has performed in South Africa, London and Germany. Her new documentary, “A Silent Genocide A Brief Insight Into HIV/AIDS” offers a glimpse into the lives of those living with HIV along with commentary by Betty Makoni, a 2009 Top Ten CNN Hero and founder of Girl Child Network Worldwide. To learn more about Ms. Zawadi or to view her documentary, please visit her on-line at www.tantra-zawadi.com.

Sokhna Heathyre Mabin will also introduce her new performance, Snapshots from the Underground Forrest. The piece is a choreo-collage of how the artist deals with betrayal, abandonment, revelation, joy, birth, healing & maintenance to and of a higher level of being. Snapshots is a melange of music, dance, vocal soundings, poetry, and of Sokhna’s reality – be it real or semi-fictitious. Working her way through love, betrayal, and be(lie)fs by way of daily commitments, Sokhna intuits how to alchemically transform the mundane to the sacred. Sokhna Heathyre Mabin is a multi-artistic performance artist who uses her life experience, dance, music & trust to express her revelations. She is also the mother of two multitalented, passionate artists, a doula, & yoga instructor.
