The Theater Offensive and Hibernian Hall are proud to present Fierce Love: Stories from Black Gay Life, a show that examines the vital issues of race, sexuality, and identity as a whole. The performance, starring its writer and producer, Brian Freeman, and Nursha Project Artist Thandiwe DeShazor, is a remix of the original production with a new group of talented performers. The newly-revived Bessie Award winning troupe uses raucous humor and fearless storytelling to challenge racism and homophobia through a series of vignettes that will leave audiences feeling the pain, pleasure and paradox of Black gay life.

Pomo Afro Homos is a ground-breaking Black queer performance troupe from San Francisco that blends comedy, tragedy, dance, music and rap in this phenomenal presentation.

With support from the National Performance Network, The Theater Offensive led the Fierce Love commissioning team with collaborators from Los Angeles, Washington DC, Burlington, New Orleans and Dallas. The Theater Offensive’s OUT in Your Neighborhood strategy is a driving force behind Fierce Love, focusing on integrating queer theater into interactive community-based programs in Boston-area neighborhoods.

The Theater Offensive’s ongoing Shout it OUT! collaboration with Hispanic Black Gay Coalition (HBGC Boston) will open Fierce Love’s Saturday matinee. Shout it OUT! will be a staged reading of original coming out stories from LGBT people of color. This work was developed in two workshop series with The Theater Offensive staff and Brian Freeman, in which community members learned to stage their writings for a broader audience.

Straight out of San Francisco’s Castro District, Pomo Afro Homos (Postmodern, African American, you know the rest), the badass brothas of queer performance rocked Dance Place in the 90s. Two decades later, Pomo co-founder, writer and director Brian Freeman remixes the company’s classic work Fierce Love with a fresh crew of San Francisco/Bay Area badass brothas.

Shining a light on Black gay life, the heart of Fierce Love is rooted in the early 1990s when it was created. While some of the pop culture references have been updated and a few new pieces have been added, including a hip hop number, many of the issues the show takes on have not changed in 20 years. As one of the few theatrical works exploring Black gay life, Fierce Love is still relevant in the US and beyond as the dialogue on race and sexuality continues to evolve.
